Presidents Message

Happy Holidays to everyone! This past month has been a busy one for the club. First of all, Riviera Elementary PTA has selected our club to receive their distinguished Honorary Service Award. This award is normally given to an individual who has performed outstanding service to the school. This year, the PTA decided to break with tradition and recognize our club for the support we give them throughout the year. Special kudos to Allen Watt and Paul Perez and the rest of the Philanthropic committee for this honor!

The club was contacted by Riviera Elementary to help with their Multicultural day by manning the food booth. This was a last-minute request by the school and Paul Perez was able to assemble club members to help make the event a success. Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

The annual Cub Scout Rain Gutter Regatta was officiated by members of HRSC. Bob Gavola led this effort and organized the judges. Thanks to Bob and the members who supported the Scouts!

We are in the process of putting together the club roster. This year we will include

E-mail addresses of members who gave us their addresses on the Internet. Don Marousek hopes to have the roster ready for our January meeting. Many thanks to Stan Dunn for helping us get the roster printed!

Thanks to the fine efforts of Ron Perez and club members who invited guests to the October Membership Night, we have added 11 new members! Our membership numbers 80 – certainly a record for recent times! The new members are John Barrington, Gail Edwards, Lee Gustafson, Darrell Jung, Bob Kim, John Mackenbach, Sam Martelaro, Travis Murphy, Dick Murtha, Wayne Perry and Steve Williams. If you have not had a chance to meet these gentlemen, make it a point to introduce yourself at the next meeting.

By the time you read this, we will have had our annual Christmas dinner (December 9). Paul Perez and Ed McClure put the event together this year and reported to me that they have over 65 people signed up for the event! I am sure everyone will have a great time at Charlie Brown’s eating, drinking and being merry.

Our next meeting is January 13 at 8:00pm. The main topic of that meeting will be organizing teams for the Annual Chili Cookoff. Mike Bullock is chairing this event and you will want to BE SURE to plan to attend the cookoff on January 27!! Start collecting those recipes and be thinking about forming your team.

Be sure to check the club Web site (WWW.HRSC.ORG) on a regular basis. We have added a section called "Late-Breaking News" which contains recent news and announcements. Also, if you have anything you would like to add to the site, be sure to let me know. We can include neighborhood information, announcements and other useful information. The Web site is another way our organization reaches out to the community we serve.

Again, best holiday wishes to you and your family. I look forward to seeing you in January!

HRSC Fall Golf Outing, November 18-20

By Don Marousek

Our Fall Classic was held at Carlton Oaks, Santee California and was enjoyed by one and all (at least the winners think so!). Twelve golfers and two non-golfers (Marie Brettnacher and Margaret Chandler) attended. The weather was perfect – clear and sunny, chilly in the early morning. Accommodations were great and included a hospitality suite that Coy and Margaret Chandler hosted. The rooms were close to the clubhouse and restaurant. The restaurant was very good – especially the shrimp and scallops linguine (Don had this twice!). For $210, golfers enjoyed two nights lodging, unlimited golf for two (cart included) and two dinners and breakfasts at the restaurant. The non-golfers paid $84 for the room and meals. The Pete Dye-designed course proved to be a challenge.

Thursday, we played individual medal play for a purse of $50. Jim Joyce and Harry Roberts tied for first place with a net 75 taking $20 each. Don Hammond took third place with a net 81. George Zettler and Ken Parker came in with a net 82. Don Marousek had a net 83, Coy Chandler a net 87, Rosemary Zettler a net 88, Dick Murtha a net 93 and Joe Brettnacher a smooth 95 ($10 consolation prize).

On Friday, we played teams in a scramble for a $50 purse. Two teams tied for first ($20 to each team) with a gross 84: Coy Chandler/Harry Roberts and George Zettler/Don Hammond. Third place with an 87 gross was Joe Brettnacher and Ken Parker. Next with a gross 92 was Don Marousek and Dick Murtha. Finally, Rosemary Zettler and Jim Joyce shared a $10 consolation prize for their 101 gross.

Since everyone felt this was by far the best deal for the money, the golf committee has contracted their next outing to be held at the same location on June 21-23. The same prices will be offered for the event. If you love golf, you will want to plan to go!! Don Marousek will have more about the event later.
