Presidents Message

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season. I know the flu has been making a lot of people's lives miserable over the past month (me, included).

Thanks again to Ed McClure and Paul Stemmler for putting together a great holiday party! It was well attended and I think everyone agreed that Charlie Brown's was a good venue for the party. I am very sorry I could not attend (I am STILL commuting to Denver every week!), but my wife, Cheryl attended (Don Marousek acted as her escort) and told me it was a wonderful party.

Robin Sawyer passed out copies of the Club's 1999 calendar. Robin found pictures of the Torrance and Redondo Beach area from earlier in this century. He proposed that we make a calendar out of the pictures and pass them out to members. There is a limited supply, so be sure to ask Robin for your copy. Many thanks to Robin for seeing this project through to completion. It was well worth the effort!

Our Philanthropic Committee, chaired by Allen Watt has been very busy with the area schools over the past two months. A new program at Richardson Middle School is their K.A.R.E. program. The Sportsman's Club has donated $1,500 to Kids on Accountability Receiving Enrichment (K.A.R.E.). This is a Torrance Unified-designated program to identify and help those children at the Middle School level who need to improve their academic and/or behavioral performance. While on this program, students may be restricted from participating in school activities such as dances, contests and graduation activities. The goal of K.A.R.E. is to give students the help and support they need to improve and get off "Student Accountability".

The money donated will help underwrite the costs of teachers' time after school to work with the children. The Sportsman's Club is proud to be a sponsor of this program and we look forward to progress reports from Joelle Longobardi, the K.A.R.E. Coordinator at Richardson. A special thanks to Don Marousek and Allen Watt for bringing this program to our attention

On Wednesday, February 24 at 7:00pm, we will host our annual City Government Night. Dick Rossberg is chairing the event. This is always an interesting and informative meeting. We are planning to have Mary Giordano, Assistant City Manager. Mary was recently promoted to this position from her role as Director of Finance. Brooks Bell, a new hire for the City is the Street Services Director. He is responsible for streets, sidewalks, sewer, trees -- all topics near and dear to Riviera homeowners. Jeff Gibson who has recently been promoted to City Planning Director will also be there to tell us about building planning and I am sure will be talking about the Begonia Farms development project, among other topics of great interest to our members. There are not many forums I know of where we can be up close and personal with the people who run the City of Torrance. Be sure to plan to attend and come prepared with questions and comments. Invite your wife, neighbor, prospective members and anyone else who might be interested. This is a community service meeting and we want people to attend.

Be sure to check the club Web site (WWW.HRSC.ORG) on a regular basis. We have added a section called "Late-Breaking News" which contains recent news and announcements. Also, if you have anything you would like to add to the site, be sure to let me know. We can include neighborhood information, announcements and other useful information. The Web site is another way our organization reaches out to the community we serve.
