Does it seem like a long time since youve seen a Sportsmans Newsletter? Dont worry, we fired the last guy, so now you can be sure to get a fresh newsletter every month (or so).
The Walteria Business Mans Club (our landlord) invited all who could attend to join their Halloween party at the end of October. If you missed it, you can check out their web site at http://communities.msn.com/wbmc.
Two new members have been added to the Philanthropic Committee: Al Ortiz, and Steve Fernandez.
Congratulations to Sportsman Russ LeFevre. He was awarded
a Congressional Fellowship beginning in January and continuing
for the year. Quite an honor.
The Christmas dinner was success, thanks to the efforts of Geoff
Graue. Let us know how you liked the location so we can decide
whether to keep Hess park in our rolodex.
The club received thank you notes from both the Walteria Library and the Walteria Senior Center for the clubs donations this year.
Bob Gavola reported on a meeting of a group of PTA parents with Riviera School Principal, Dr. McClain. The school would like to use this years proposed Sportsman donation for painting/beautification of the school. This is because the school district has spent all of the bond fund money on other projects, and the district apparently will not allocate any money for painting . A lively discussion ensued with the conclusion that the club is not in favor of spending money on painting projects. Other possibilities for a donation project that the club can agree with will be explored.
Bob Gavola also thanked the club on behalf of Cub Scout Pack 718 for the payment of their Boy Scout charter (an annual gift by the club). At the same time he asked for Sportsmen to be judges at the Cubs Pinewood Derby. Dick Rector and Mel Yates went to the event, and provided the impartial results (so how come my kid didnt win?).
At this years Chili Cook-off we had a great turn out,
and the final results should provide some motivation for next
years teams. We invited a team from the Walteria Business
Mans Club to participate this year and they went
ahead and won the event on all counts. We once again brought
in a panel of impartial judges from the International Chili Society,
and both the club membership and the judges voted the Business
Mans SKRAM chili as tops. Thanks to Sam Martelaro for a
great job.
Results for the Chili Cookoff were:
