Presidents Message
Happy Easter! Winter is finally behind us and with Easter and the time change, we now know we can look forward to warmer (and longer!) days. With the advent of Spring, I have now seen all four seasons in Denver, Colorado. I have been commuting weekly to Denver since June of last year. I did not expect this contract to last this long and I am not certain when I will be finished, but I hope to be wrapping up the work in May. Who knows, I might get to attend a Sportsman's meeting this year!
A lot of social activities have taken place over the last month. We had City Government Night (many thanks to Dick Rossberg for arranging the speakers and chairing the event), Steak and Joke (kudos to Dave Robertson and Tom Rougeaux for sponsoring a night of good food and high-brow entertainment) and Easter Egg Hunt (Mike Betlinksi did a great job covering the details).
The club sponsored a blackjack table at the annual Riviera Elementary Monte Carlo fundraiser. We were recently recognized by Torrance Unified School District at their annual Service Awards dinner. Paul Stemmler attended the dinner and took a bow for the club.
The Easter Egg hunt was a great success. We had nice weather (remember, last year it rained!) and a good turnout. Ed McClure handled the bull horn and got the parents and kids organized. There were plenty of Sportsmen on hand to help Mike Betlinksi with all the details on the day of the event. The kids were delighted with the hunt and we had good prizes to reward their efforts.
Our next big events in April are Frontier Days and Beer Tasting. Steve Fernandez is chairing the event and will be asking for your help, so be sure to sign up for booth duty, setup, teardown, cleanup and other tasks. Robin is working on the venue for the Beer Tasting and will be announcing the location at the next meeting. Remember, the meeting on 4/28 will not be at the clubhouse. It will be held at the bar where the tasting will take place. Check with Robin or "Late Breaking News" at our website (WWW.HRSC.ORG) for the location of the event. Be sure to check the club Web site on a regular basis.
On Saturday, May 29, we have our annual pancake breakfast. Don Young is chairing the event and will be distributing tickets to organizations very soon. This is Don's first event as a member of our club, so he will need lots of help and advice.
Enjoy the nice weather and be sure to get involved in all the upcoming activities.
Meeting 24 February, 1999 City Government Night
Mike Betlinski gave an update on the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt and requested between 10-15 volunteers to assist on the hunt morning. Sign-up sheet was passed around. It was announced that the club would be sponsoring a table up the upcoming Riviera Elementary Monte Carlo Night ($100 donation). The meeting was then turned over to Dick Rossberg to introduce and m/c the City Government night agenda.
Mary Giordano, Assistant City Manager, presented an overview of the strategic plan for the city, including background on the recent citizen satisfaction survey that had been conducted along with how this recent survey compared with the previous survey. Brooks Bell, Streets Dept. provided handouts and an overview of the Street Services Department functions and structure. Also handed out were some recycling brochures along with pencils and magnets made of recycled products. Jeff Gibson, Planning Department, presented an overview of his departments structure. He reviewed the Hillside ordinance and provided statistics that indicate 90% of all hillside area overlay projects are approved, 5% are dropped, 5% go before the city council. Of the total only 1-2% "go bad".
A question and answer session followed: The left turn restriction into Neece Ave. was brought up ( ED: Left turn from Eastbound PCH now prevented by installation of crash posts). The Begonia Farm issue was skirted with the suggestion those interested should attend the council meeting. The extending of Lomita Blvd. was raised. Response was that the city no longer had the right of way and therefore this was no longer an option. Trees: Trees are exempt from the hillside ordinance and the city tries to no to regulate this issue. Vacant City Land: The city reviews via the general plan rather than specific lots. Example was that Edison has requested to build commercial RV and storage facility on vacant land by 190th. St. The Land Management team periodically reviews status of vacant city land and can recommend sale if the land is considered surplus. Hawthorne Blvd.: There is a long term plan to improve Hawthorne Blvd. Between PCH and the PV border, however, it is quite a way in the future.
