March 2001

The club showed a great deal of dedication (or a tremendous lack of romanticism) by fielding a turnout of over 25% of the membership on Valentine's Day. If your wife or significant other wonders why we scheduled a meeting for that day (like mine did), refer to the meeting information on the opposite page-under Officers.

Dick Rossberg gave a preview of City Government Night (more later), and Don Marousek gave a run down on the Spring Golf Outing. Golfers and wives or lovers are welcome. The destination is San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall, CA (north east of Oceanside), and the dates are May 8, 9, 10. Price is $145/golfer $75/non-golfer. Unlimited golf plus a cart and two nights lodging are included (no meals included) A great deal! Contact Don to sign up.

Sam Martelaro extended an invitation to the Cub Scout Pack 718 'Blue and Gold' dinner which was held Friday, February 23rd to show appreciation for the club's support of the Pack. No members were able to attend alone, but the HRSC was well represented by the seven or eight members who went along with their Cub Scout sons.

Our last meeting, City Government night was a great success. We had the privilege of hosting City Manager, LeRoy J. Jackson, Police Chief, Jim Herren, and Fire Chief, Rick Bongard. Dick Rossberg chaired the meeting and acted as MC for the panel. After the introductions, our guests each gave a presentation and fielded questions from the crowd. Following are some of the highlights.

Our Fire Chief, Rick Bongard (who's father was a Sportsman is the '60's) gave an overview of the city's fire department. In case you aren't aware, the Torrance fire department is among the best in the country. They have been ISO rated as a "Class I" department; one of only 27 in the country. The average response time is within 3 minutes of an incident, with 95% being within 5 minutes.

Police Chief, Jim Herren reviewed the police departments five Bureaus and Community Centers. He also reviewed areas of concern for the city as Cyber crime (internet), Identity theft, and Elder abuse (scams). The department is involved in some regional cooperative efforts, including SMART (Special Multi Agency Response Team) to help deal with these concerns.

City Manager, LeRoy Jackson who has been with the city for 35 years, gave an overview of what is takes to manage a city the size of Torrance. The population varies from 140,000 night-time, to 500,000 day-time. while the city has 1400 employees in 14 departments.

The gentlemen left a bevy of information about the city services and budget. Some may still be available if you check at the next meeting, or you can check out the City web site at … www.torrnet.com
