November 1998

Presidents Message

October was a productive time for the club. We accomplished much and I will cover that a little later in this article. First, however, I wanted to remark on how proud I was of the club in its response to the passing of Don Marousek's wife, Betty. I know the outpouring of support means a lot to Don.

Betty was a remarkable person and showed great courage throughout her life. Don was a Marine who was involved in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Betty was without Don during his overseas duty and was pregnant while Don was in Korea. Betty was a teacher at Riviera Hall in the early 1960s and became Principal, a post she held for 15 years. The library at Riviera Hall is named after Betty as a tribute to her years of dedication.

Betty died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 11.

The Manhattan Beach Fair was a success. We netted over $9,000. Congratulations to Jeff Wells who did an outstanding job of organizing the event! Thanks to everyone who helped!!!

The Membership Night dinner meeting was a resounding success. We had 15 prospective members attend the meeting and several paid their dues that night to join! Many thanks to Ron Perez for putting together an excellent program. Also, many thanks to all the members who attended and brought guests. Please be sure to encourage your guests to attend our November meeting and bring their dues!

The Christmas dinner will be held at Charlie Brown's at the King Harbor Marina on Wednesday, December 9. Be sure to see Ed McClure or Paul Stemmler for more details and to sign up. An information sheet will be mailed out soon giving all the important facts.

The fall golf outing will take place November 18-20 at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course. Don Marousek is chairing the event and has all the details.

We only have two more meetings before the end of the calendar year. There is one meeting in November, Wednesday 11/11 and the Christmas dinner serves as our December meeting.

There are still a few members who have not paid their annual dues. We need to get this done so that you will be included in the printed roster. I want to get this information to Stan Dunn as soon as possible so he can have our rosters ready before the end of the year! Please contact Juris and give him a check. If you have an email address, we want to include that in the roster this year. Be sure to let myself or Chris Collignon know this information as soon as possible!!!

On a final note, I have been working on constructing an Internet Web site for our club. I have secured a domain name (WWW.HRSC.ORG) and I have put some information (including past newsletters, club calendar, etc.) on the web site. Please take a look and let me know what you think (Geoff-Graue@msn.com). If you have any additional material you would like to see on the site, let me know. I will be happy to add it.
