September 2001

It's that time again. The Sportsman's Club is back out of summer hibernation and is starting in on a new fiscal year. We have the usual allotment of events upcoming, so be sure to come to the opening meeting and sign up for some Funnel Cake making. We need a volunteer to chair the event this year, (but we promise some help from the last two chairmen). Please step up and let us know. If you can't wait to volunteer, get in touch with Jon Stott (378-8284 or jon@rdswire.com).

A quick re-cap of last year is in order:
The Manhattan Beach Fair was a great success, netting approximately $8200. It wasn't a record, but let's shoot one this year. We also manned some of the BBQ's at the Riviera School fair, helping to raise some money for school. Some new members were added to the Philanthropic Committee (Steve Fernandez and Al Ortiz).

We had a good turn-out, and signed up a handful of new members on Membership Night. Keep an eye out for likely suspects, and we'll try for the same this year. The Fall Golf outing was at Warner Springs, and a good time was had by all.

Geoff Graue chaired the Christmas dinner at Hess Park, and the new location was pronounced a winner. Let us know if you have any thoughts/suggestions while we still have time to plan this year's dinner. The Chili Cook-Off was a great feast. Our land lord, the Walteria Businessman's Club, was invited to field a team, and they cleaned up. They won not only the club's vote as best, but also were tapped as champs by the impartial Int'l Chili Society panel.

City Government Night last year saw the City Manager and both the Fire and Police Chiefs as our guests. It was an informative night, and we appreciate these city main stays giving an evening to keep the club up to date.

Steak and Joke night already has a chairman for this year. New member, Ray Dracoules was last year's winner, so now he gets to see it from the organizing side.

The tail end of the year finished in a flurry as usual. Beer Tasting was such a success that we're forcing the same duo to chair the event again this year. We can assure all of you who missed a chance to bid on the club's stereo speakers, there will be another auction of the same speakers this year. The Easter Egg Hunt was a beautiful day, and thanks to the Chairmen and volunteers was its usual great day for the children of the area.

The Riviera Fair netted approximately $1,100 thanks to the hard work of Al Ortiz. The event has been getting more and more difficult as a money maker, and the sales were tough but well appreciated. Scholarship night was the same week as the Pancake Breakfast last year. We awarded five scholarships to South High seniors, and then went and grossed just under $10,000 at the Pancake Breakfast, helping raise money for all the participating organizations.

We finished up the year at Ellison's Chateau for the Installation Dinner. Not only was the new executive board introduced, but we also awarded the Socrates Award for the year to Morris O'Kelly of South High.

Don't forget, come to the first meeting, and beat the rush by sending in your dues now.
